L’alumine fondue brune est un produit fabriqué par réduction par fusion progressive de bauxite calcinée dans un four à arc électrique à haute température (environ 2000 degrés Celsius). Sa composition chimique se compose principalement d’Al2O3 ( 94,5-97 % ) et de quantités résiduelles de TiO2 , SiO2 , Fe2O3 , CaO et MgO.
L’oxyde d’aluminium brun se caractérise par une bonne ténacité, une résistance mécanique élevée et une dureté (9 sur l’échelle de Mohs). La microdureté du matériau atteint environ 1900 kG/mm 2 . La gravité spécifique (densité) est égale à 3,90+/-0,05 g/cm 3 . La masse volumique apparente, selon la taille, est égale à 1,52-1,87 g/cm 3 . Il a une conductivité thermique relativement élevée et une faible dilatation thermique. En ce qui concerne l’électricité, c’est un isolant.

Bien que l’oxyde d’aluminium ait une dureté et une capacité abrasive inférieures à celles du diamant, du carbure de bore et du carbure de silicium, il est largement utilisé pour le meulage de matériaux ferreux, la finition de matériaux durs et résistants, le remplissage de pièces en céramique lorsque le coût de traitement est important.
